Cañon City is taking significant steps to rejuvenate its historic downtown area by offering grants aimed at assisting entrepreneurs in upgrading and revitalizing old buildings. This initiative is designed to stimulate economic growth and preserve the city’s rich architectural heritage.
Supporting Entrepreneurs
The city has introduced two primary grants: one for façade restoration of historic downtown buildings and another for essential life-safety upgrades. These grants help offset the substantial costs associated with bringing older structures up to current safety codes, making it more feasible for business owners to invest in the area.
Steve Parks, a recent transplant from Florida, exemplifies the program’s impact. After purchasing a downtown building, Parks faced the daunting expenses of necessary safety upgrades. Thanks to the city’s grant program, he was able to proceed with his plans. “Super fortunate enough to get the grant, we closed the following day,” Parks shared. “Because I’ve run numbers upside down on this thing, and you just can’t do it without the grant and some other help that we’re getting.”
City’s Vision for Revitalization
City leaders recognize the importance of investing in the downtown area to enhance the quality of life for residents and attract visitors. Rick Harrmann, head of the city’s Economic Development Department, emphasized the city’s commitment: “We offer this as a way to hedge that investment a little bit.” Mayor Ashley Smith highlighted the broader benefits, noting that the revitalization efforts not only create a more charming environment but also generate increased tax revenue for the city.
Community Impact
The revitalization efforts have already shown positive results. The downtown area is experiencing increased foot traffic, with parking spaces along the main street frequently occupied throughout the day. Mayor Smith expressed her enthusiasm: “I won’t say parking problems, I think it’s awesome, that it is full. There’s always people down there day or evenings.”
These initiatives reflect Cañon City’s dedication to preserving its historical charm while fostering economic development, ensuring a vibrant and thriving community for years to come.
